From breakfast to beauty

If there’s one indulgent purchase you make for your body this season, let it be this one. Nutrient-dense superfoods boost health and fight disease when you include them in your diet. Now, beauty biggies are adding them to products so you get similar benefits. Antioxidant-rich blueberries and omega-3-rich walnuts are the old crop of do-good foods that lent their ‘natural’ value to formulations. Today, it’s not just about the odd berry or nut added here and there; brands have entire ranges with a particular ingredient.

But how effective are these? Dr Soma Sarkar, medical director and dermatologist, The Skin Inn, Mumbai, says, “Superfoods are good for maintenance of skin and hair—they may not have absolute skin-changing effects on their own, but they contribute to your ultimate beauty goals, whether that is anti-ageing or lightening dark patches. Use a good brand and consult your doctor if you develop a problem.”

However, despite all their goodness, they come with limitations. Delhi-based dermatologist Dr Deepali Bhardwaj says, “Apply them on skin that is not raw, infected or bleeding. And remember that eating them will yield better results.” If you have a problem with your skin, check with your dermatologist if you can use these. However, remember that smoking, drinking and unhealthy eating can mess up the benefits. Here are five superfoods that now feature in products.

Goji berries

These vitamin and antioxidant-rich berries tackle signs of ageing. They contain 18 amino acids and zinc, germanium, calcium and iron. Dr Bhardwaj says, “Goji berries help the skin stay supple and youthful. They are especially effective in treating sun-related skin issues, ageing and inflammation.”

Quinoa

Looking for a natural hair strengthener? Quinoa is the answer, it seems. It protects the hair shaft and contributes to repair of damaged hair. Quinoa also helps in anti-ageing, as it increases essential oils in skin and tissue. Don’t have access to the product? Try this: Dr Sarkar says, “Mix quinoa seeds with milk to make a paste and apply on hair as a pack.”

Chia seeds

Native toMexico, Chia seeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, and boost the skin circulatory system, adding to the overall health of skin, hair and nails. Superfood seekers must try them to fight geriatric-related skin issues, atopic dermatitis, dry-skin issues, and even severe forms of eczema.

Moringa

From the seed, pod, and sap to leaves, fruit and bark, every part of this green plant is loaded with benefits. Dr Sarkar says, “Its anti-inflammatory properties help in cleansing and moisturising of skin.” Moringa keeps skin infections at bay and is effective in treating hair fall. Dr Bhardwaj says, “People with autoimmune skin disorders such as vitiligo (patchy skin), lichen planus (non-infectious skin rash) and psoriasis (patchy, scaly skin) benefit from moringa.”
