The words John Paul Young famously sung – “Love is in the air, everywhere I look around” – have certainly rung true in the Vogue office over the past year. We’ve had four engagements, three pregnancies and plenty of family weddings in the past 12 months since our last issue. Add to that the sublime romantic fairytale essence that has infiltrated the couture season this year, and our love for everything bridal has come full circle.
This issue we’ve decided to make it easier for you to get inspired by featuring entire mood boards for every type of bride. Plus, we have advice about finding the dress from our fashion features director Zara Wong, fresh from her own engagement, whose search for the perfect wedding dress has taken her from Sydney to London and New York (see page 32).
Another bride who searched the globe for inspiration is Jesinta Franklin, who flew to New York for a custom fitting with Vera Wang for her two divine wedding gowns, both of which feature in the new Powerhouse exhibition Love Is: Australian Wedding Fashion, chronicling the history of Australian weddings (see story on page 36). This exhibition also displays Nicole Kidman’s exquisite custom Balenciaga gown from her nuptials to Keith Urban in 2006, which has never been seen full-length in public until now.
Jesinta, who tells us how she pulled off planning her gorgeous garden wedding in the Blue Mountains in secret (from page 94), is featured with dozens of other modern brides who share their special day, including Sylvia Jeffreys’s fun-filled nuptials in the Kangaroo Valley, Ginia Rinehart’s beachside affair on Hamilton Island, and Aje designer Edwina Robinson, who married her photographer beau Felix Forest in the south of France. Other international wedding destinations include a beach club in Capri, a church in England, a castle in Ireland, a vineyard in California, and our cover girl Bridget Malcolm, who married her sweetheart Nathaniel Hoho in a mountain-view ceremony in Pennsylvania.
